The Firkin for September 2018

This month brought the bad news that Pacific Plate was pulling out of its Glendale taproom only location and that was followed by Kinetic Brewing up in Lancaster was closing up shop as well.

As I mentioned earlier this month, as nice as the PacPlate space was on the inside, it was stuck deep at the south end of Brand in a no mans land between Atwater Village to the sound and the Americana part of town to the north. It was small despite a nice patio that I bet many people didn’t even know about in the back.

Kinetic seemed to lose steam as Lucky Luke and Transplants along with GABF medal winner Bravery were the most talked of breweries from the land way up the freeway. The explosion of Ventura breweries probably did not help as did the additions of San Fernando and 8one8 and Hand-Brewed lured people to new destinations.

Churn is going to happen and it needs to be a word to add to your beer dictionary because it will happen more. Up to now, the only example we have had of it here in Los Angeles is when a brewer leaves for another brewery. But spaces are going to go open and equipment will be sold and it is a matter of whether the location didn’t work or the beer didn’t work or the marketing of both didn’t work.

The churn will open up opportunities for others. Kinetic could become a new brewpub with new owners and brewers. The PacPlate space, now spiffed up, could become a #independent beer bar or maybe (my (probably impossible) dream), an L.A. Brewers Guild Bar where you can taste rotating taps from places far and wide in Los Angeles. Mostly so I wouldn’t have to drive to far flung tap rooms.

With more breweries on the horizon, the amount of beer still is high for the consumer but the status quo won’t always be the same.

Casual Friday – Dry River & Kinetic

The L.A. County Brewers Guild is impressive in where they can combine craft beer with diverse events and Casual Fridays at Walt Disney Concert Hall is one to check out. I have posted about this program before and it is back on Friday, March 31 with a duo of composers and breweries,

Mozart and Haydn are on the concert bill and after the music has died down you can enjoy a complimentary beer tasting from Dry River Brewing and Kinetic Brewing along with members of the LA Phil.

A Kinetic Expansion

Brewing in northerly Lancaster has taken a huge square foot step forward as Kinetic Brewing Co. in cooperation with the city will expand from their current brewery/restaurant into a production facility + tasting room + outdoor events space. As with all things brewery related, timetables are kinda fluid but look for this to open up in late 2017.
Capture
Once online and brewing, Kinetic will be able to quadruple their production in the first year alone and then really go big by year three. But the two key items that stand out to me are the potential for a garden with a hop farm and the addition of a canning line. For the environmentally and drought aware, they will be taking aiming to hit the goal of being nearly footprint neutral with the addition of solar power and water recycling.

Beercentricity

Beer Storytelling is the focus of Beercentricity a new event on the Los Angeles craft beer scene to be held at Barbara’s at the Brewery on May 19th at 6pm.

“Four local brewers will come together in one night to share the stories behind the beer they make. It will be a fun, conversational way of getting to know the inspiration behind some of the best beer in California. Participants will enjoy four complimentary beers created by these brewers and enjoy a selection of carefully-curated food pairings, all included in the ticket price.”

And the line-up for the initial event is a quality mix.  New and established.  Local and out of town.  Plus Automatic does not make it up here so this might be a rare chance to try beers from a true craft beer pioneer in Lee Chase.

Featuring:
Mark Jilg – Craftsman Brewing Co., Pasadena
