A Quote & A Beer – November 2017

This month, it is time to make the connection of brewing as art form with a quote from Jackson Pollock…

I continue to get further away from the usual painter’s tools such as easel, palette, brushes, etc.

I am not saying that brewers need to stop using mash tuns, whirlpools and hop torpedos. In this case, tools are the ingredients. And maybe instead of looking for the next hot hop, maybe change up a yeast strain, spring for the malt from a small farm that will add something different to a tried and true recipe.

It doesn’t have to be wild ingredients but just take a look at the palette and see if you are tied overly much to a way of doing things.

A Beer & A Quote – October 2017

People will buy anything that is ‘one to a customer.’
Sinclair Lewis

Does this encapsulate the current canned and hazy craze or what? Now, I don’t know what product that Lewis was referencing in that sly dig but it does seem that American’s are especially prone to falling for the limited supply gag. Just take a look at all the one-offs that Oreo’s supplies to grocery store endcaps. Despite being a land of plenty, we just can’t stop gravitating towards what is just out of our reach.

A Quote & A Beer – September

The quote for September comes from Logan Pearsall Smith:

“The vitality of a new movement in Art must be gauged by the fury it arouses.”

When I read this quote and put the word “brewing” in front of Art , it immediately brought to mind the Hazy NE IPA which raised discussions into territory close to fury or at least to agree to disagree levels.

To compare and contrast the Hazy Arts, make an IPA run to Mumford Brewing in Skidrokyo and check out their re-designed menu board to pick out one regular IPA and a hazy one. (They usually have both)
