Sean Suggests for May 2018

Apparently hazy ain’t going away and considering that as I type this, a cloudy day is above me, might as well heed the omens and recommend some….

~LIGHT
Upland/ Juiced in Time6.5% ABV
“Juiced in Time is a New England-style IPA that’s absolutely dripping with ripe tropical fruit and bold juicy citrus flavors. Wheat and oats were added to the malt profile along with a special mineral treatment to the water to create body and smooth texture. Virtually all the hops were reserved for after the boil to minimize bitterness and amplify flavor and aroma. From the glowing orange appearance to the soft creamy mouthfeel and delicate sweetness, this beer is everything delicious about tropical fruit juice embodied in a dangerously drinkable IPA”>

~MEDIUM
Arrow Lodge/ Pinball Wizard6.7% ABV
“Hazy India Pale Ale brewed with Citra, Nelson, and Amarillo hops.”>

~BIG
Boomtown/ District Haze7.5% ABV
“Ultra-fresh and and packed with notes of pine, citrus, and stonefruit.”>

All of these beers can be found at Sunset Beer Co. (unless they got bought up real quick)

The Beers of Christmas – Day 27

We head up to Upland Brewing for a little Latitude Adjustment….
“Winter is coming. Cold weather, hats and gloves, and frosty windows are fast approaching, but we’re taking a stand against winter with a new seasonal beer. Starting November, Upland fans can just say no to snow with Latitude Adjustment, a tropical pale ale with pineapple and coconut.”

Yanks v Brits

britishclass

Though I am not terribly fond of the logo and font used on the graphic, I am down with the overall goal of this transatlantic test.

“This July and August, London- based Fuller’s Brewery invites you to explore the differences and similarities between American craft beers and the traditional British styles that inspired them. And aside from having a great educational beer experience, you are entered to win weekly giveaways and a trip to London (including a VIP tour of the Fuller’s brewery) just for sharing your comments with us.”

I love giveaways.  And especially if it involves a brewery tour and not a logo’d pint glass.

“How does it work? Go to one of the participating bars or restaurants , and try a Fuller’s beer side-by-side with a beer from one of our partner breweries, Upland Brewing Co. and Epic Brewing. Then go back to the British Class Meets American Craft website and write in your thoughts. You’ll be automatically entered to win!

No participating bars or restaurants near you? No problem! Just go to your local bottle shop and create your own comparison by picking up a Fuller’s beer and an American craft beer of the same style.”

This is a nice mix of breweries.  Granted no/zero Upland beers here in L.A. but a compare and contrast of Fuller’s to Epic would be much fun.

“Fuller’s and other British breweries pioneered many beer styles that inspired American craft brewers in their quest to improve the condition of American beer (pale ale, ESB, porter, and IPA, to name just a few). We look forward to hearing your thoughts as you compare the characteristics of Fuller’s British ales to American beers.”

Let’s hope the internet trolls don’t spoil this.

Indiana Brewery # 3 – Upland Brewing

Our third stop on the Indian brewery tours is Upland. I have featured their beers a few times on this blog so it’s about time that I talked about the whole place.

They are famous for their sour beers with odd fruits as well as this big beer….
A dark and robust beer brewed in the traditional stout method. Teddy Bear Kisses features an abundance of dark malts and high alpha hops for a powerful impact of roast, chocolate, and sweet bitterness. The lucky few who cuddle up to a warming session with Teddy Bear Kisses sense the velvety malt character, balanced bitter intensity, and soothing chocolate notes created by long aging on fair trade cocoa nibs. Teddy Bear Kisses will make you feel warm and happy inside, but it’s definitely not your childhood cuddle toy.

Baltic Porters are an Eastern European take on classic English Porters. Influenced by Russian Imperial Stouts, Baltics are higher in strength than traditional Porters, and feature multiple layers of flavors and aromas. Badder Elmer’s is a meaty dark lager, utilizing cold fermentation temperatures to achieve a quaffable and clean brew, with malty highlights ranging from nutty to licorice and candy caramels. Fruity aromas lead to a complex malt character and supportive continental hop bitterness.

Persimmon Lambic?

Just when you think the beer world has pulled all the rabbits out of the hat, here comes another new idea…
upland-persimmon-lambic-2
from the Indiana brewery…
“The persimmons were provided by Aaron Persinger, a local singer/songwriter who is currently the drummer for Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band.”
They have a whole slate of fruited lambics coming this year, including KIWI!
